Fiordland is a vast region of wilderness, one
of the worlds largest National Park's, also one of the wettest regions
on earth with annual rainfall measured in metres rather than millimetres.
The picturesque township of Te Anau on the shores of Lake Te Anau, largest lake in
the South Island, is our preferred base for visiting the only easily
accessible fiords, Doubtful Sound and Milford Sound. Doubtful Sound requires
a cruise across Lake Manapouri, 30 minutes from Te Anau, followed by
a scenic coach over Wilmot Pass to Doubtful Sound for a very relaxed
Fiordland experience. This tour is available as an overnight luxury cruise or as a full day
excursion. Visiting the enormous underground hydro-electric power station
between Lake Manapouri and Doubtful Sound is optional on the day excursion
only. |

Smallest and northernmost of all of the fiords
of Fiordland, Milford Sound is also known as the Eighth Wonder of
the World, is the only fiord accessible by public road, and a very different experience to Doubtful Sound. We usually drive
each way from Te Anau
for a Real Journeys nature cruise on Milford Sound allowing plenty of time
en route for photo stops. It is normal to experience rain in this area of
extremely high rainfall and for most visitors to Milford Sound it is the
awesome power of countless waterfalls from surrounding mountainsides which
will be remembered; yet within a few hours these countless waterfalls will
disappear as the rain stops. The professionally guided Milford Track
Guided Walk follows an alternative route over the mountains from the
head of Lake Te Anau to Milford Sound. The 5 day/4night Milford Track (for
many years known as the finest walk in the world is available as an
option over summer months only (usually late October to late April) and is
walked each year by many thousands of all ages sometimes in sunshine and
sometimes in heavy rain. |
